Overland flood studies for Alstonville and Wardell, plus flood function mapping for Ballina. None is about the Richmond: the council's own report says March 2022 flooded urban areas while river flooding stayed relatively minor. One of the three decides how development applications get assessed.

The 27 August meeting adopted the strategy, put it on exhibition and
directed talks with Mary’s Place and Orange Sky. The resolution straight after it asks
the NSW Government for four kinds of funding and, on the fifth point, improved police powers
to require rough sleepers to vacate public spaces. Both unanimous, four councillors absent.

612,073 passenger movements in 2024-25, 18th nationally, from the
Commonwealth's own airport file. Ballina is now 2.4 times the size of Coffs Harbour, and
its best national rank came in the first COVID year without it doing anything.
Flood Recovery + Land
Named in nearly every recovery story here, including ours, and rarely
explained. It was created after the 2022 disasters, its work spans risk reduction as well as
recovery, and it says it facilitates all disaster recovery funding for NSW.

The $4 million Australian Coffee Research Program runs five years,
led by Southern Cross University. Australia’s coffee industry is around 40 growers on
about 400 hectares, and northern NSW is one of the growing regions. What the money works out
to per hectare, and the threefold gap between two partners on how much coffee we drink.

On 22 October 2024 councillors resolved six votes to one not to
appeal, on senior counsel’s advice that the four available questions of law had no
reasonable prospect of success. By then the court fight had cost council more than
$430,000, and an appeal could have added up to $200,000.

The Reconstruction Authority is developing the region’s first
multi-hazard Disaster Adaptation Plan. The values study feeding it asked 211 people to
sort 100 cards, and states in its own words that they are not a statistically significant
sample. The useful part is where the groups disagree.

The Australian Macadamia Society has revised its 2026 national crop
forecast down to 56,888 tonnes in-shell (at 3.5 per cent moisture), off its June assessment,
from 59,080 tonnes in March, still a big rebound on the 43,800-tonne 2025 crop. What the
national number means for the macadamia’s native home.

Five years on, Southern Cross University’s own data says its
six-week-term Southern Cross Model lifted student success from 74.8 to 91.1 per cent and
nearly halved first-year attrition. Why the region’s university decided dropping out
was its problem to fix, not the students’.

Health + the Tweed Valley Hospital
The $723.3 million hospital at Cudgen added more than 190 beds and 12
theatres, but the number that says most is a different one: on the government’s
figures it reduces the need for 5,000 patients a year to travel outside the region, thanks
to new radiotherapy and interventional cardiology services.

Four options went on exhibition, 61 responses came back plus a joint
submission from 22 landowners objecting to the southern alignments, and council adopted a
hybrid fifth route assembled afterwards. At $36.5 million it is the costliest of the five,
and the report says plainly why it won.

A new pedestrian and cyclist suspension bridge, 160 metres long and
disaster-recovery funded, reconnects the Casino CBD to Queen Elizabeth Park and the
riverside, restoring a crossing the 2022 floods took. A modest recovery story worth marking
precisely because it is finished.

Byron tourism + housing
On domestic visitor nights Byron is an ordinary council of its region.
On international nights it is 5.3 times Tweed and 8.4 times Clarence Valley. All four
councils' fifteen-year series, side by side, which nobody else publishes.

Byron tourism + housing
Most of Byron Shire limits a non-hosted short-term rental to 60 days a
year (from 23 September 2024), half the statewide default, with 365-day precincts kept for
the Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads town centres. How the caps work and the housing-versus-
tourism logic underneath them.

Two sections of the old rail corridor are open (Murwillumbah to Crabbes
Creek and Casino to Lismore), the trail has won the state’s top tourism award, and it
reports strong early visitor numbers on its own figures. What is open, who funded it, and
the stretch set to open next.
